Sake Tasting and Pairing
Jun 28, 2009, Sunday, 6:30 PM
Our second annual sake tasting event returns to Jin Sho, featuring a guided tasting of six premium spring and summer sakes, each custom paired with a delectable seasonal dish prepared by chef-owner Kaneko, formerly of New York City’s famed Nobu restaurant.
Since its opening in December 2007, Jin Sho has received rave reviews for the exceptional quality of its fresh fish, along with its creative interpretations of classic Japanese dishes. We have reserved the entire restaurant for this event.
Miwa Wang, sake-sommelier from True Sake (560 Hayes St, San Francisco), America’s first sake store, will guide us through the mystery and myth surrounding this liberating libation with an introductory ‘Sake 101’ primer. Learn to discern the subtle flavor notes evoked by examples of various sake types and regions, and how they complement different foods. Sakes and books will also be available for purchase.
Space is limited, so don’t miss out on this unique gastronomic treat!
Note that due to a limitation of the software, each attendee must register SEPARATELY.

Navigating Turbulent Times on Wall Street: A Contrarian Approach to Investing
Oct 14, 2008, Tuesday, 6:30 PM
The financial news of the past weeks has left all investors on shaky ground. Understandably we're all wary of the financial markets. But before you go stuffing your remaining assets in a mattress, join the HCSV for an evening of insights from an investment advisor with a unique perspective and investment approach.
Karl Mills, the managing partner of the Oakland-based investment firm Jurika Mills & Keifer, is a self-described "contrarian investor" whose counter-intuitive philosophy is often at odds with Wall Street conventional wisdom.
In times like these, says Karl, fear trumps long-term reason. Karl advises that some of the best investment opportunities lie where the risks are perceived as greatest. Karl will share his advice and identify some opportunities for the individual investor...and along the way will show some of his original cartoons that shed a humorous light on the not-so-funny business stories in the headlines.
AMD will prepare badges to allow attendees to enter the building. To permit printing, kindly respond by noon, October 13.
Karl O. Mills, CFA may be reached at Jurika, Mills & Keifer, LLC, 2101 Webster Street, Suite 1550, Oakland, CA 94612 510-625-0199 www.thecounterpointfunds.com

Evening with Professor Michael Sandel
Apr 12, 2008, Saturday, 7:00 PM
Over a thousand students pack Harvard's Sanders Theater for Professor Michael Sandel's “Justice” course—an introduction to moral and political philosophy. They come to hear him lecture about great philosophers of the past—from Aristotle to John Stuart Mill—but also to debate contemporary issues that raise philosophical questions—about individual rights and the claims of community, equality and inequality, morality and law. Students are asked to answer the age-old moral reasoning dilemma: what is the right thing to do?
To make this legendary course an educational resource that reaches beyond the Harvard classroom, Harvard recently commissioned a professional production team to film the lectures in broadcast quality video, including student interaction. Last fall, in a new and successful venture in distance learning, the university offered the full set of 24 lectures, titled “Justice Online,” to Harvard alumni worldwide. And now, WGBH, Boston's PBS station, is seeking funding to broadcast the course as a 24-part series on public television.
Laura and Gary Lauder will host Professor Michael Sandel and Harvard alumni at a cocktail reception and fundraising gathering to showcase a screening of a video trailer for this innovative project, followed by a discussion of plans by WGBH and Harvard to bring this exciting course in civic education and moral reasoning to a national audience.
Please join us for this gathering, hosted by Laura and Gary Lauder at their home in Atherton, CA, on Saturday, April 12, 2008, 7:00 - 9:00 pm.
Space is limited. Please RSVP to Laura Lauder at 650.323.2111 or at Samantha@Lauderpartners.com.

San Bruno Mountain Habitat Restoration Work Party
Mar 16, 2008, Sunday, 1:00 PM
Join park volunteer veteran and Harvard Club member Peter Li for an afternoon of fun doing important habitat restoration work at San Bruno Mountain State and County Park. This event offers Harvard Club members and friends the opportunity to work together outdoors, discover a special Bay Area place, and learn about habitat conservation, local ecology, natural history, and environmental politics.
Harvard luminary E. O. Wilson called San Bruno Mountain a "global treasure", and numbered it as one of only eighteen "global biodiversity hotspots in need of immediate protection", alongside such places as the Usambaa mountain forests of Tanzania and the Columbian Chocó. It is home to a number of endangered species, including some found nowhere else in the world, and also harbors some of the largest known Ohlone shellmound sites, reminders of the native people who preceded us here. As the last major remnant of the unique Franciscan ecosystem that supported native life in the Bay Area for millennia, San Bruno Mountain is truly hidden in plain sight, an underappreciated ecological treasure in our own backyards (just minutes north of San Mateo!). And the mountain has a storied place in the history of the local Bay Area conservation movement as well as on the National scene in the history of the Endangered Species Act.
For today's event, we will join local restoration group San Bruno Mountain Watch for their monthly habitat restoration, which can always use more volunteers. Later in the year we hope to expand on this, combining with San Bruno groups, the California Native Plant Society, and Harvard Club of the Peninsula to adopt our own site on the mountain for sustained restoration efforts. Come show your support for this budding project and feel free to contact Peter (peter.li@ucsf.edu) with any thoughts or ideas.
Meet 12:45 p.m. at the San Bruno Mountain Watch office, 44 Visitacion Ave., Brisbane, CA, just off Hwy 101. Work on the mountain changes with the seasons. Today we'll focus on weeding invasive species along the ridge above Buckeye Canyon. Bring water, sunscreen, layered clothes, and sturdy shoes. Gloves and tools will be provided but feel free to bring your own if you have them. Hard rain may cancel; call Peter (415-255-4742) or the Mountain Watch Office (415-467-6631) Sunday morning to check. Also let Peter know if you are available for or interested in carpooling.

Sunday Afternoon Jazz in Atherton
Nov 04, 2007, Sunday, 4:00 PM
This New Orleans native started singing gospel in his church choir. In high school, he picked up the saxophone and played with the band. After continuing his musical studies at Xavier University, Kenny has been singing and swinging ever since.
Joining the U.S. Navy Band in 1986, for nine years Kenny performed throughout the United States, Asia, Russia, and Australia before before making his home in the Bay Area. He has performed and recorded with many other artists and appeared in the off-Broadway production "Fire at Keaton's Bar and Grill" with Elvis Costello and Deborah Harry in London and New York. You can hear him on several CDs, some available for purchase Sunday afternoon.
His voice? His extraordinary voice with four-octave range evokes the classic styles of Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughn and the colorations of Stevie Wonder and Donny Hathaway. But you better hear it yourself; you can catch a preview at Kenny's website:
kennywashingtonvocalist.com
As usual, Kenny is assembling some of the area's top sidemen, so you will have a musical experience not to be missed! And there's not just music but the chance for intimate conversational exchange with all the musicians--an opportunity not available at usual gigs but what makes the HCSV jazz sessions so special. Also as usual, from 4-4:30, you'll sip wine or a non-alcoholic beverage and enjoy nibbles; at 4:30, you take your place in our hosts' gorgeous living room and then enjoy music and conversation that end at 6 p.m.
